Regions of the galaxy

The galaxy is mapped from its core outwards. The closer to the centre, the older, richer and more crowded the worlds; the further out, the wilder. Grid squares like R-16 come from the official maps.

  1. Core Worlds

The oldest and richest worlds, Coruscant and Alderaan among them — the seat of the Republic and later the Empire.

  2. Inner Rim

Once the frontier, now a ring of settled systems between the Colonies and the Expansion Region.

  3. Expansion Region

Worlds opened up for mining and industry, many of them stripped by the big corporations.

  4. Mid Rim

Far from the Core but still on the main trade routes: Naboo, Kashyyyk and the Mon Calamari.

  5. Outer Rim

The lawless edge: Hutt space, smugglers, bounty hunters and backwater worlds like Tatooine — where most heroes begin.

FAQ

How many planets are there in Star Wars?

Nobody has counted them all: the galaxy holds billions of stars, and the films, series, games and books have named thousands of worlds. This atlas covers the 51 planets and moons that matter most on screen.

What are the regions of the Star Wars galaxy?

From the centre outwards: the Deep Core, the Core Worlds, the Colonies, the Inner Rim, the Expansion Region, the Mid Rim and the Outer Rim, with Wild Space at the edge. The western part of the galaxy, the Unknown Regions, is largely uncharted.

Where is Tatooine on the galaxy map?

In the Outer Rim Territories, grid square R-16, in the Arkanis sector — far from the Core and close to Hutt Space.

What is the capital of the Star Wars galaxy?

For most of the saga it is Coruscant, a planet covered by a single city in the Core Worlds, grid square L-9. It was the seat of the Republic and then of the Empire. The New Republic later moved its Senate between member worlds.

Which Star Wars planets were filmed in real places?

Many of them. Tatooine was filmed in Tunisia, Hoth on a glacier in Norway, Naboo in Italy and Spain, Ahch-To on Skellig Michael in Ireland, Jedha in the Wadi Rum desert in Jordan and Crait on the Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia. Each planet page shows its locations on a map.
