Overview

Endor is the forest moon of a gas giant of the same name, a temperate world of giant-tree forests, grasslands, mountains, rivers and lakes[1]. Its trees tower like redwoods, and the great planet Endor hangs in the sky above them[3].

The moon belongs to the Ewoks, small furred forest dwellers about one metre tall who live in villages built among the trees. They learn technology quickly and build gliders and catapults of their own[2]. Their treetop villages are linked by rope bridges and platforms high above the forest floor.

In Return of the Jedi the Empire moves in to build a shield generator here, protecting the second Death Star that is being finished in orbit nearby[1]. The occupation has already driven the Ewoks out of one of their villages, and a Rebel strike team soon lands on the moon to deal with the generator[1][4].

Who lives here

Role in the galaxy

Endor is where the Empire placed the shield generator that protects its second Death Star, the battle station being finished in orbit[1]. That turns a quiet forest into a battlefield, because a Rebel strike team has to land on the moon and deal with the generator[1].

The ground mission is not one the Rebels could manage alone. A young Ewok named Wicket befriends Leia and persuades his tribe to join the Alliance's ground team against the Imperial garrison, adding their knowledge of the forest, their gliders and their catapults[2]. The Ewoks have their own reasons to fight, since the Empire has taken over their forest[4].
