Overview
Crait is an out-of-the-way mineral planet in the Outer Rim, a dry world whose surface is a layer of white salt lying over red mineral soil. Where the crust is broken, long red scars show through, and the ground beneath is riddled with burrows and tunnels[1]. The galaxy map files it under grid square N-17 in the Bon'nyuw-Luq sector[3].
Nobody lives on Crait today. The only buildings are the remains of a hidden Rebel base, a mining installation that insurgents funded by Bail Organa turned into a fortress in the Empire era and later abandoned[1]. It lies inside a mountain, and a skulk of crystal-furred foxes called vulptices has made it home[1][2].
Crait first showed up in print, in the 2017 novel Leia, Princess of Alderaan, and reached the screen in The Last Jedi[7].
Who lives here
Vulptices
Crystal foxes: gregarious, curious, foxlike animals with crystalline-bristle coats and keen eyesight, able to squeeze through narrow gaps. A skulk lives in the abandoned Rebel base[1].
Rebel insurgents
Not natives. Anti-Imperial insurgents funded by Bail Organa converted an old mining installation into a fortress, then left it when Imperial patrols changed[1].
Resistance fighters
Not natives. The Resistance counts the abandoned Rebel base as an emergency refuge for its fighters, a fallback place that Leia kept in reserve[1].
Role in the galaxy
Crait matters because of its hidden Rebel base. Anti-Imperial insurgents funded by Bail Organa turned an old mining installation into a fortress and abandoned it after Imperial patrols changed[1]. Leia and her allies clashed briefly with the Empire there before it was left empty[1].
After the Galactic Civil War Leia saved the base's coordinates in a file for emergencies, so the planet stayed available as a fallback. Apart from the old base and its crystal foxes, the planet is empty, and its only on-screen appearance is The Last Jedi[1][5].
