Overview

Dagobah is a swamp world in the Sluis sector, a place of permanent mist, bogs, thick undergrowth and enormous gnarled trees[1][3]. The air is humid and foggy, and the ground is mostly mud and water.

The planet lies far from the main hyperspace routes and has almost no technology, so few ships ever come near[1]. Its bogs are full of reptiles and amphibians of many kinds, and much larger lifeforms are hinted at but never shown[1]. Somewhere in the swamp is a cave called the Cave of Evil, heavy with the Force[3].

Yoda settled in a small hut here, in exile and hidden from the Empire[1]. The planet is where Luke Skywalker comes to learn the ways of the Force in The Empire Strikes Back, and its mist and mud make it feel very far from the starships and bases of the rest of the saga[1].

Who lives here

Role in the galaxy

Dagobah is a hiding place with a purpose. Yoda picked it as a refuge from the Empire: the swamp life and the strong presence of the Force there helped to conceal him, and the lack of technology kept visitors away[1]. Few places in the galaxy are easier to overlook.

For Luke Skywalker it is a school in the middle of nowhere. He crash-lands in the swamp in The Empire Strikes Back and begins his Jedi training under Yoda, far from any Rebel base or Imperial patrol[1]. The same strong Force presence that hid Yoda from the Empire makes it a fitting place to train[1].
