Overview
Mustafar is a volcanic planet in the Outer Rim, a world of glowing lava rivers, constant eruptions and obsidian plains under clouds of ash and smoke. A gas giant hangs close by in its sky, and the heat on the surface is extreme[1].
Life here is hard. The Alazmec, a sturdy native people, have bodies that withstand the heat, and the Techno Union has long mined the planet's rare, valuable minerals from platforms built above the lava[1].
Mustafar lies in the Atravis sector and is best known for the castle that Darth Vader built there, a black obsidian fortress rising from the lava fields. It appears in Revenge of the Sith, The Clone Wars, Rebels, Tales of the Empire, Rogue One, Vader Immortal and The Rise of Skywalker[1][2].
Who lives here
Alazmec
Sturdy native people whose bodies withstand the planet's extreme heat. They are called the Alazmec rather than Mustafarians[1].
Techno Union miners
Not natives. The Techno Union has long mined Mustafar's rare, valuable minerals, working from platforms built above the lava[1].
Vader cultists
Followers who make pilgrimages to Darth Vader's castle in the lava fields. They come from elsewhere rather than living on the planet[1].
Role in the galaxy
Mustafar is a hot, volcanic Outer Rim world whose rare minerals made it valuable to the Techno Union. During the Clone Wars its remoteness also made it a hideout for Separatist leaders, which drew the planet into the conflict[1].
Darth Vader later builds a castle here, on top of an ancient Sith cave, and the planet keeps drawing visitors in later stories, from an Imperial director in Rogue One to followers who make pilgrimages to the castle[1][2]. The virtual-reality series Vader Immortal also takes place partly in the fortress.
