Overview

Exegol is a hot, dry and constantly stormy world in the Unknown Regions, a planet of rocky wastes, barren plains, abyssal fissures and storm-lashed canyons[1][4]. Lightning never stops here, and a black sky hangs over dark red-brown rock.

It is also one of the oldest Sith strongholds, hidden from the Republic and the Jedi[1]. The Sith Citadel rises from the surface over the abyssal fissures, and the galaxy map places the planet at grid square F-7[2][4].

A fanatic cult, the Sith Eternal, uses Exegol as its base and sanctuary. Children are raised in its secret shipyards, factories and military camps to work and fight for the cult[2]. The Rise of Skywalker is the only film set on the planet, where it serves as the Sith's secret stronghold[1].

Role in the galaxy

Exegol is the hidden power base of the Sith. It combines ancient strongholds with modern industry: the Sith Citadel built over the fissures, forges where the old Sith worked metal, and the shipyards and factories run by the Sith Eternal[1][2].

The cult's shipyards and camps are where its workers and soldiers are raised, and its armoured Sith Troopers are among the soldiers it fields[1][2]. Exegol also turns up outside the films. In the Darth Vader comics, Vader obtains a Sith wayfinder and follows it to the planet, yet the world stays unknown to the rest of the galaxy[4].
