Overview

Jedha is a small, cold desert moon, and one of the earliest places in the galaxy to study the Force[1]. Windswept dunes, mesas and canyons surround its ancient walled Holy City, Jedha City, where pilgrims came to seek guidance among timeworn streets and shrines[1].

The moon circles a planet called NaJedha and holds valuable kyber crystals[1][6]. It lies in the Terrabe sector of the Mid Rim[6]. Its holiest site, the Temple of the Kyber, was the home of the Guardians of the Whills, an order of spiritual warrior-monks[7].

In Rogue One, Jedha is under Imperial occupation. Stormtroopers patrol the streets, the Empire strips the moon of kyber for its weapons, and rebel partisans under Saw Gerrera fight back[2][6]. Jedha is also where Jyn Erso first meets the monk Chirrut Îmwe and his companion Baze Malbus[2].

Role in the galaxy

Jedha matters because it is holy and valuable at the same time. For a very long time it drew pilgrims and believers in the Force, and it became important to the Jedi Order[1]. Its kyber crystals made it attractive to others as well.

That combination is why the Empire occupied the moon. Its soldiers looted the Temple of the Kyber, drove out the Guardians of the Whills and took the kyber for their weapons, including the Death Star[2][6]. The occupation fed an insurgency led by Saw Gerrera, and in Rogue One the moon is where Jyn Erso comes face to face with Saw and learns of Galen Erso's message[2].
