Overview

The U-wing is the Rebel Alliance's troop carrier and gunship, introduced in Rogue One. Incom Corporation built it as the UT-60D, a craft about 24 metres long with swing wings that open out from the hull[2]. Two pilots fly it, and optional door gunners man weapons at the side stations[2].

Cassian Andor's team uses a U-wing for the Rebellion's covert missions in Rogue One[5]. The ship also appears in Andor and in The Mandalorian and Grogu[1].

How it flies and fights

The U-wing is built to move people first and fight second. Two Taim & Bak KX7 laser cannons cover the front, and each door gunner station can mount a heavy infantry weapon, so the crew can add firepower at the doors[2]. Deflector shields protect the hull, and the outstretched swing wings echo ship shapes from the prequels[2].

Behind the scenes

  1. Doug Chiang's team began with a troop-carrier take on the X-wing, and director Gareth Edwards asked for something like an X-wing version of a Huey helicopter. It was the hardest ship to resolve: 781 designs were drawn, and the underside needed the most iterations[3].
  2. The outstretched swing wings echo ship shapes from the prequels. For filming, the cockpit was built on a gimbal in front of LED panels[2].

U-wing: questions and answers

How big is a U-wing?

What is the U-wing used for?

The U-wing is a Rebel transport and gunship. It carries small teams on covert missions, such as Cassian Andor's flight from Yavin 4 to Jedha in Rogue One, and gives troops air support in battle[5][4].
