Overview
Mandalore is the homeland of the Mandalorians, the warrior culture behind beskar armour and the Darksaber[1]. It is a hot, dry planet on the Outer Rim, a world of deserts, caverns and mines[5].
Mandalore was once a green world. Centuries of war between its clans left the surface barren, and by the time of the Clone Wars most Mandalorians lived under domes in cities such as Sundari, the capital[2][3].
Mandalorian society is divided into clans and Houses that spent much of their history fighting one another, and peace has rarely lasted[3]. Other peoples live on the planet too, such as the four-eyed, tusked Alamites of the wastes, and old stories tell of the mythosaurs, giant beasts from Mandalorian legend[5][4]. The planet's story runs through The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels and The Mandalorian[1].
Who lives here
Mandalorians
A warrior culture, mostly human, divided into clans and Houses. Centuries of war left the surface barren, so by the Clone Wars most of them lived in domed cities[3].
Alamites
Four-eyed, tusked humanoids who live out in the wastes. They appear in the third season of The Mandalorian, where they are hostile to outsiders[5].
Mythosaurs
Giant beasts of Mandalorian legend, remembered in the culture's oldest stories and handed down as myth from one generation of clans to the next[4].
Role in the galaxy
Mandalore is where Mandalorian identity comes from: beskar armour, the Darksaber and the clan system all begin here[1]. It is also a planet that has never stayed at peace for long. Clans fought one another for centuries, and in the Clone Wars Duchess Satine Kryze governed as a pacifist and kept the planet neutral[1][3].
Mandalorian characters keep coming back to it. Bo-Katan Kryze was born there, and Sabine Wren trained at the Imperial Academy on Mandalore before she defected[8][9]. The planet appears in The Clone Wars, Rebels and the third season of The Mandalorian, and the question of who should rule it returns again and again[4].
