Overview
The N-1 is the royal starfighter of Naboo: a bright yellow single-seater with a long spike at the nose and two exposed engines out to either side of the cockpit[2]. The Theed Palace Space Vessel Engineering Corps builds it, and it measures about 11 metres from tip to tail[1].
For its size it is well armed. Two blaster cannons and two fire-linked proton torpedo launchers do the shooting, and an astromech droid can ride in a socket at the rear[1]. A class 1 hyperdrive gives it the range to leave its home system[11].
It makes its screen debut in The Phantom Menace, where Naboo's pilots fly it in the Battle of Naboo, and returns in Attack of the Clones as an escort for Padmé Amidala[1]. About four decades after that battle, Din Djarin flies a rebuilt antique N-1 in The Book of Boba Fett and The Mandalorian[3][4].

How it flies and fights
The N-1 is built for speed: in atmosphere it reaches about 1,100 kilometres per hour[11]. Its two exposed engines sit out on either side of the cockpit[2]. Two blaster cannons handle dogfights, while the fire-linked launchers send proton torpedoes at tougher targets[1]. One pilot flies it, and the astromech droid in the rear socket is optional[1].
Unlike many starfighters, the N-1 needs no docking ring to make a hyperspace jump. With its class 1 hyperdrive, a lone fighter can travel between systems under its own power rather than hitching a ride on a larger ship[2][11].

Variants
Din Djarin's modified N-1
The antique N-1 rebuilt on Tatooine for Din. Republic-era power parts and an induction intake charger make it faster than stock, and it gains heavier cannons, a torpedo launcher under the nose and a shimmering grey finish with traces of yellow[1][4].
Antique N-1 starfighter
A worn relic of an N-1 kept by Peli Motto in Hangar 3-5 on Tatooine, which she can modify into a one-of-a-kind ship[3].
All-chrome N-1
In Forces of Destiny, Ahsoka Tano trains Padmé Amidala in aerial combat aboard a chrome-plated N-1[1].
Behind the scenes
- Doug Chiang designed the N-1 and has called it a favourite. George Lucas pushed for a bold colour, which gave the fighter its yellow[2].
- Chiang gave Naboo's ships an aquatic feel: the engines come from the pontoons of an F1 powerboat, and the long spike echoes a fish's tail[7].
- A life-size 1:1 N-1 prop from The Phantom Menace is displayed at the Museum of Science in Boston, so the fighter's true size can be judged in person[5].
