Overview

Ryloth is the Twi'lek homeworld, a hot and humid planet on the Outer Rim not far from Tatooine[1]. Its land swings between extremes: deserts, mesas and canyon valleys, dense jungles in the lowlands and a scatter of volcanoes.

The Twi'leks live in clans and villages spread across the valleys and mesas, and the domed capital is Lessu[1]. In the Clone Wars the Separatists invaded and blockaded the planet to cut off trade, and the Republic needed Twi'lek freedom fighters to win it back[2].

Under the Empire, Ryloth became a protectorate. Imperial garrisons settled in, and a long Twi'lek resistance grew up around Cham Syndulla, which also hosted Hera Syndulla's rebel cell[1]. Twi'leks from the planet, among them Hera, Aayla Secura and Bib Fortuna, appear all across the saga, in the films and the animated series alike[8][9][11].

Role in the galaxy

Ryloth is where the Twi'leks' part in the galaxy's wars is told. In the Clone Wars the Separatists blockaded it to choke off trade, and the Republic could win it back only with the help of Twi'lek freedom fighters[2]. The fight is as much the Twi'leks' as the Republic's, because it is their own homeland[1].

The Empire later made it a protectorate, and the resistance that grew up there lasted for years[1]. That resistance links Ryloth to the Ghost crew: Cham Syndulla's fighters work with the rebels in Rebels, and Hera Syndulla, who grew up on Ryloth, becomes the pilot of the Ghost[6][8].
